While Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Assassin’s Creed are lately trying to redefine their serials with major thematic changes or almost unheard of, sequel taking a pause for whole year. We have series that are releasing even more sequels. Lego games, ten years ago were coming out on an annual basis, but now it is already grown into two to three games a year. Recently emerged Lego Marvel’s The Avengers, with we also know that this year will be The Force Awakens, the Lego world, and already announced the checkered Ghostbusters released.
And again, we sincerely look forward to Lego The Force Awakens, their first Star Wars is one of my favorite Lego games and I really do not know how I am still not tired of it. I am a fan of this silly dices, even when it comes to themes such as the Avengers about which in fact I have had not an idea how will it turn out. In fact, if truth to be told, I thought we already had this game, but it seems that it is Marvel Super Heroes, and I still do not see the difference. It is not the greatest sin of Marvel’s The Avengers that it has a lineup of characters that I were completely unknown to me, moreover, its interesting to meet new characters throughout the game. The problem is that with this game, TT Games finally shook my confidence in their franchise.
Marvel’s Avengers game greatly uses the already well-known and proven aces, but still brings a pair of novelty and its pace is different from all the Lego games to this date. It shocked me at first how charged action is, the battles really know how to become frenetic and somewhat stressful. This is definitely the most intense Lego experience so far, which will delight those who play Legos in split screen. There are a bunch of colorful characters who can combine their moves to fight what seems so cool and it is really a pleasure to implement in tandems together, although quite soon becomes repetitive.
On second thought…. when I think about it, it can be said for the entire game.
Before long I began to get the inevitable sense of déjà vu. It is no longer enough to smash villains until they break up into pieces, they usually attack weakened and then you have to press another button to start the animation in which your character has to finish them. Given the fact that each of the characters has three such animations, and each level is made up of waves of opponents until you fix a puzzle, get ready to watch the same animation over and over again. Here and there is a small break from the action, offering different game play in driving or flying, but usually it only creates a confusion and it is not much more interesting than the rest of the game.
But if you play by yourself, as I have said, then prepare yourselves up for a lot of nervousness. The controls are clumsy as ever, AI is expectedly unsophisticated and with so much action on the screen it is difficult to coordinate moves around parts on which most fun is designed. Even the new puzzles are more absurd than ever and its really painful to solve them. Imagine yourself and a complete stranger in the middle of the main square at noon blindfolded and then you have to find each other without a sound and give yourselves high fives. Such is the sense of playing Marvel’s Avengers without a partner, and nobody likes to get left behind when you put up your hand expecting to get a high five..
In fact, to me the most fun part of the game comes only after its completion. After the main story, there are open areas where you can freely choose characters and have fun. This freedom and openness is what we desperately miss in the rest of the game, but I’m pretty sure that this is the largest Lego game ever with regard of how many these maps there are, but I do not understand why they do not have a greater role. You can access them earlier, but it only seems right to finish the main story before, unfortunately, it is just not worth it.
I admit that I was not already well acquainted with the Avengers nor Marvel universe, so I was hoping to compensate for at least part of it throughout this game. The story mainly covers Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron movies, and it does not serve as a good advertisement. In order to preserve the typical charm of LEGO, every so often the scene randomly bursts with a character on a pig or a chicken on his head. Some voices are clearly recorded for the purposes of the game, while others are drawn directly from the film, and this results in a terrible dissonance, which is more lame than fun . The script is at some times classically funny and good, but what will that do if it is delivered as if its presented by a boring politician in a parliament.
As soon as I have to be forced to play one more level before turning off the game, I know that something is wrong.
It was one of the first fears from when Lego games got voices, but so far they did a pretty good job. This time, the main ingredient in the success of Lego games – charm is unfortunately completely absent. Partly because of action-packed scenes on the screen next to which there is no room for silly adventures, partly because of too serious presentation of what was supposed to be crazy turn to the original story. I do not remember when I had so many bored moments playing a Lego game, but as soon as I have to force myself to play one more level before turning off the game, I know that something went wrong.
With another player, if you are a fan of Marvel heroes and in a family environment, Marvel’s The Avengers will entertain you as much as the other Lego games. But for me it’s a bit too much of conditioning, especially when I’m used to get quality entertainment and a few laughs from LEGO serial , regardless of subject matter and circumstances. I have the impression that this title Lego seeks more than it offers. But not all is so bad for Lego, the Avengers are one of the worst games in the series only for a few awful designer decisions, that can be fixed with the next game. I expect a great return in the next game and a lot of laughter, and if nothing else, Marvel’s The Avengers at least, will be long forgotten by than.
