Sony‘s upcoming God of War for PlayStation 4 is representing a significant reorganization for the series. The new game has rejected the roots of Greek mythology, and instead has firmly intended to introduce its fans and other players to a lesser-known Nordic mythology. However, the developer Sony Santa Monica has recently suggested that the franchise does not intend to retain or explore parts of German myths but it plans to extend to other ages.

Specifically, Cory Barlog, the director of the game, said that “the Greek games were the Greek era of God of War”, and given that fans criticize the series for its “perpetuity“, Sony Santa Monica believes it is time to innovate the series before it ends up sentenced to death. Consequently, the mythological belief system of the upcoming video games is linked to the Nordic era, and one day God of War may perhaps present the history of the ancient Egypt and the ancient Mayan civilization from its perspective. Since the time of Assassin’s Creed Origin‘s story greatly helped the franchise return to its old glory, the developers’ desire to introduce Egyptian mythology should not be that much of a surprise, and the Mayan culture is interesting and mysterious enough to both surprise and charm the audiences.

Finally, it should be noted that Barlog dreams that God of War as a franchise will become much larger and more important than what it currently is. In other words, he hopes to reach the level of popularity enjoyed by Uncharted and the already mentioned Assassin’s Creed.
