Talking about famous PlayStation brands is somehow difficult to miss out on conversations and WipEout titles. Although not many, these futuristic racing titles have greatly influenced the popularity of the console. The reason was not just the appearance of these games, which during the era of PSX left their effect, but the gameplay was equally well-visually visual, and everything was spiced up with great electronic music from the end of the century. It would be argued that it is the best extension of WipEouta, but now it is overwhelming because the new Omega Collection does not look too much into the past but presents the last three games in the series.

The last part that saw the light was the first place in the election campaign. This is WipEout 2048 which we played in PS Vita five years ago, but only in this collection we got a real vision of what this game was supposed to represent. Thanks to the technology that lies in the PlayStation Case 4, the game is almost unrecognizable even though it is mechanically still based on the same. About 2048 we were writing in a separate review, so we will not keep too much on his description.

In addition to the 2048, there are WipEout HD that we played many years ago on the three and its Fury expansion which was also available on the same console. All three games are separated and available as soon as they start racing, ie through the campaign they only unlock new weights and driving vehicles with a few additions. The rest is all the same as the outbreak of the aforementioned titles, which provides the “original” feeling of WipEout racing you may already know.

“All three games are separated and available immediately, and only new weight and additional vehicles are unlocked.”

That is why all three campaigns have their “personality” and do not differ only on the paths. The oldest game, or the HD sequel, is closest to the original series form because it is most geared towards pure driving, or has too much focus on destroying opponents. Additionally, HD is actually processing two WipEout games from the PSP and may leave the impression as the least layered game in the collection due to hardware constraints at that time. However, because of the focus on driving is probably the best entry point for all new players who are first introduced to this series.

On the other hand, Fury is a total contradiction. Here the elimination of the opponents is more pronounced, with the expansion of new modes that have enriched gameplay towards a more aggressive approach to driving. Since the game was originally designed for PlayStation 3, progress has been made in paths that have more detail and carry more atmosphere through the races. It does not mean that the HD tracks are bad or poorly quality, but such minorities are noticeable when driving through the first few chapters. Later, when the order reaches a much higher speed, then only looking at how best to run and secure the first place.

“While WipeOut HD is primarily focused on pure driving, Fury adds players to an aggressive approach during racing.”

The 2048 is mentioned in the best visual style thanks to the art director, and by some personal assessment it is also the most difficult part of me in terms of performing the tasks. Specifically, racing here always differs according to what is available within them. For example, in one of the races, the only weapon that can be picked up is a machine gun. That is why the game requires a little more attention to such restrictions, so the style of driving has to adjust to the current situation.

Gameplay through all three games is quite different so the entire collection would be interesting to drive, because the content really does have a lot. Online racing is, of course, a completely different matter. Although the AI opponent is challenging, sometimes it may get the impression that they have a catch-up system so they do not play fair. Therefore, the biggest challenge is the skill of another player. It is worth mentioning that online is stable and it makes no sense to use the proof that technical difficulties are wrong if you are left accustomed without problems.

“Opponents are challenging but sometimes use a catch-up system that you know exactly what to expect from them.”

Still, it’s not all perfect in this collection, at least watching, or listening to my perspective. Although Omega Collection looks at modern times, the soundtrack is not at the level of the previous titles. Simply, there are fewer things to add to adrenaline during tense racing. Of course, you can agree your own list of songs, but the series has always been strong on this issue so here is a bit disappointing that the quality of the chosen stuff is not on the same level as in the original.

Everything else is simply at the top level where the fun is in the first place. It is said that the donated horse is not looking into the teeth, so if the sale of this collection is satisfactory, we might get a new, full-fledged extension of WipEout. Until then, this collection is simply precious to have a single WipEout fan around. True, it is about the content already seen without the right newspapers, but thanks to the technical side, the top-of-the-line graphics accompany the feeling of speed is the best so far, and that means a lot for this type of racing. After all, it’s not like you’ll find a lot of games on the market that spin in native 4K resolution and smooth 60 frames per second.
