We believe that we all know those kids who are struggling to be noticed and be seen as special so then they perform nonsense. One would come in the middle of winter to the school in a T-shirt. Never mind that it’s stupid, but it is functional strategy of drawing attention to themselves. Sometimes this immature behavior maintains in an adult. Very similar symptoms can be found in the game Watch Dogs 2.
The most important lesson that Ubisoft has pulled out of the original Watch Dogs was that the hacking is the most interesting when causing chaos. No one is interested in ethics of the story when you have the option to switch the traffic lights in disco mode. Watch Dogs 2 is therefore designed as an amusement park for Marcus Holloway, agile hipster geek who is exactly that type from introduction. His main goal is to be observed, to obtain as many fans for his activist group DedSec, because in this way, he can unlock new hacking techniques, scripts, or whatever – it is futile to look for logic in the idea.
Immature part, the so-called foolishness so you would be “cool” is complex in the Watch Dogs 2 just on this basis. DedSec as activist group collects fans to have access to more information, for the benefit of audience that gives you the green light to act like a terrorist, an idiot and above the law. In other words, at the same time you are doing in the interest of the people and against them. Such a contradiction in no way helps the understanding of the story whose theme is not as harmless as it tackles the current issues of privacy in an era of digital life.
Well, Watch Dogs 2 can theoretically be played in three ways – aggressive, manipulative and without anyone to stop the finger. It’s not like you have to do any damage, direct or indirect, if you try to avoid it. But the problem is that you’re missing most of the fun. It’s contradictory even for the story, but creating chaos with hacking is very fun. This time, you have more options – hacking cars, provoke gangs conflicts and more. Things are no longer hacked mainly through the camera as in the first part, but you have more options. For example, you have the RC toy car and a drone which can often solve mission without Marcus even be in the same location.
As I already mentioned, the action of the game is funny contradictory in itself. What Watch Dogs called hacking in reality has nothing to do with this procedure. San Francisco would in the real world be happy if its traffic was rare and smooth as in the game. And contrary to the laws of physics in which Ubisoft believes, in reality, you cannot pluck moped pole out of the ground. With this in mind, do not try to take Watch Dogs seriously. If you’re looking for something like that, guided by the experience of the previous Watch Dogs, you’ll probably be disappointed.
